The Story Of Hanamichi Sakuragi

I received an e-mail from Andy about the life of the "so-called real" Hanamichi Sakura who inspired the hit anima/manga "Slam Dunk." Whether it's real or not, you decide. Below is the content of the e-mail:

Hanamichi Sakuragi was born in 1968 in a family of the common working class. His mother passed away when he was very young, without the love of his mother he use the violence (out-on-the-street fights) to resolve his problems. As a young boy he was very tall at the age of 12 average 1.75 mts, and his body began to acquire force and a lot of resistance through his fights. Once he had a fight with the students in the sports zone of the University of Tokyo; his abilities to fight, velocity and tough physicality they attracted the coach of the basketball team, and offered him to join the team.

In a party of practice, at the age of 17, against the National Team of Japan, Hanamichi of 1.89 mts, was the unique one that was not frightened by the professionals and noted 33 points alone: 10 shots, 3 nailed, 1 triple, 1 shot that did not find the terminology to explain, and 2 free shots.

Although its team lost with only 59 points (59 - 115), had been an excellent first game for Hanamichi. Basketball was in chaos, and he was named "The Hope of the Japanese Basketball". Nevertheless, its father fell sick a year later. Hanamichi went of, return to Tokyo, and this trip would cost him all. He descended of the bus in Tokyo and he was on the verge of crossing the street across the hospital when a car that went very fast hit him . Although he had the "body of steel", the impact simply was too strong. He collapsed, they carried him to the hospital. Unfortunately it was too late... before they sent him to the operating room (he) died from internal hemorrhage, only with 18 years of age.

The World of the Japanese Basketball was completely destroyed, they called this loss "Colossal". The mangaca Takehiko Inoue created its series" Slam Dunk" based on the history of his youth.

Copyright And ISBN or ISSN Application

I'd like to share Ruel Sarmiento's entry on our blog, Paperclipkomics, to help those who want to get their work copyrighted and get ISBN or ISSN at the same time.

Original Title: Paperclip Komics gets Copyright and ISSN

Here it goes:

Yup! Its the National Library in Ermita at the back ! Henry and I are sure exhausted after trekking the whole floors back and forth just to enforce the RIGHT the constitution gives us for our intellectual and creative toil. But don't worry, to those who wants their stuff copyrighted, it'll only takes less than half a day to do it. BOTH COPYRIGHT AND ISBN/ISSN. If you know what to expect...

What to bring:

-1,000 bucks. That'll cover the whole fees for ISBN/ISSN, Copyright, Documentary Stamp, Notary Public, and for the Gatorade/s you'll gulp at 7-11 infront of the Nat'l Lib.

-An I.D. or the National Lib. Reader's Card

-Copyright Application with TYPEWRITTEN ENTRIES and fully NOTARIZED!

-4 copies of work. 2 for Copyright and 2 for ISBN/ISSN

Getting the Copyright

First thing to do is to log-in at the front desk. You'll be given a visitor's badge in exhange for your I.D. Then proceed to the copyright division at the second floor(right wing facing the building). If you already have a notarized and typwritten entry form, then a staff of the copyright division will check the application and gets 2 copies of your work. NOTE: Inside your work should have this printed-Philippine Copyright 2006 by fill name of author/s. Or if you don't have a form, get a copy at the copyright division and fill-up the entries(typewritten only) and have it notarized.

We have a painful experience looking for a notary public and a typwriter! Now there is a street at the other side of 7-11 just perpendicular to Kalaw. Walk straight ahead 'till you cross U.N. Ave. and you won't miss it. They'll charge 170 pesos for typing the entries, notarization, and cedula(20 pesoses)...if you don't have any.

After all the requirements are checked, go to the cashier at the 4th floor and pay 200 pesos. Then proceed to the 6th floor to pay for the documentary stamp. And you're done! Go back to the copyright division to give the application form and receipts. After that we're told to come back after a month to get the certificate.

Getting the ISBN/ISSN

This was much easier but the climb (left wing) going to the ISBN/ISSN office made me wish that they should have a public elevator inside this building. We are kind of expecting a little debate if the officer won't give us the ISSN because of our format, which is comics. She just said, "Ano to? Ah...komiks". Flipping the whole pages one by one, gave us a form to be filled up and followed by an almost murmored "Haay Lord!" after leaving the table and consulting the other officer which we believe was just surfing the net at 10:30 am. After that we paid again 200 pesos at the cashier(4th floor-right wing) then went back again to the ISBN/ISSN division. We showed the receipt then we're finished. We've been told to place the ISSN number at the upper right front cover of our komiks and that we should give two copies to them everytime we publish.

Paperclip Komics issue 2 will be another separate copyright since we will be introducing 4 new stories from 4 new artists.

So that's it. Hope this guide will be handy to those who wants a Copyright and ISBN/ISSN on their work!

Need More Cartridge?

I am an independent (indie) comic artist and in order published my indies I have to print a lot of copies. Most of the time I ran out of ink and ink can be very expensive (depending of course of the brand and model of your printer) especially for a small time publisher like me. It is very hard to look for a cheap ink and cartridge as a replacement for the used one. It is very heavy on my budget to buy right from the shops and stalls in the mall. Luckily for us Pinoys, people like us who have accounts in paypal can no receive and send money through them so we can shop over the internet more conveniently now. This great news makes me more confident to shop and look for items online and I found Cartridge Finder as a very good alternative in looking for cheaper and reliable cartridge online.

Cartridge Finder is the site to beat when it comes to cartridges and printers. Imagine you can easily find in CartridgeFinder.com about 10,000 different models of printer, copier, and fax machines as well as link you through to potential suppliers. Super-convenient, isn’t it?

Whenever I ran out of stuff that I need for my indie comics, I’ll check
Cartridge Finder first because I know I can rely on them. Why don’t you try and check Cartridge Finder too.

Disclosure: This blog entry is brought to you by CartridgeFinder.com.

Pinoy Komiks in Danger!!!

Below is some part of the entry that I read from Gerry Alanguilan's blog. Please have some time to read it and comment on the entry, your views are well appreciated.

The Death of a Once Great Industry
by Gerry Alanguilan

I was browsing through one of my online message boards just the other week, the one specializing in the local Philippine comics industry. I read a message from long time illustrator Nestor Malgapo that illustrator Rod Santiago was reporting Atlas Publications' cessation of publication of all their comics.

It was the last report in a long line of alleged reports indicating the end of comics from Atlas. I had been hearing the same thing as early as last year during October's Komikon, the First Philippine Comics Convention at UP Diliman.

Although early reports have proven to be untrue as I continued to see komiks being sold at my local town store, this last report by one of the illustrators working for Atlas itself, seemed to confirm the inevitable truth.

Komiks from Atlas had been limping along for the past few years, appearing only sporadically, and hardly ever these last few months. I realize, much to my chagrin, that the last batch of comics I was able to buy was from late last year and early this year, and then no more.

Atlas Publications had been the repository of a truly great and legendary line of comics, passed down from company to company, beginning with ACE Publications, which originated these comics as early as 1947.

Spacegirl

I also like to recommend this Spacegirl strips by Travis Charest. When you try to access it, Travis has a note for you and this is what it says: "Check back here every Monday night (or Tuesday morning ) for the next installment. Note: This is just a bit of fun I get to have for an hour a week, don't take it too seriously:)"

You know what? His fans and most of his visitors are taking it seriously. So if you'd like to know why just check it out. It's good, really. Here's a link: Spacegirl

P.S. I think you have to be a member to check it though.

Trese #3

This book written by Budjette Tan and drawn by Kajo Baldisimo is good piece of artwork. Book #3 is by far the most emotional and most interresting of the 3 books. The artwork this time is more promising. In this book, Ms. Trese is in search for the murderers of the members of the Black Knights and in the later part of the book will surprise you (really) and might even make you drop your precious tears. I don't want to spoil a good read so you may get a copy at Comic Quest Megamall for only Php 30.00. Enjoy...

Justice

The world is in great danger because humans rely too much on super heroes and the only people who can stop the end of the world are the super villains. These villains share the same nightmares on how the world ends so they alone can save it. Now they have to stop all the super heroes from ever saving anyone to stop the world's annihilation.

Wow, this also is a super book like the Infinite Crisis. I already have the copy of the 1st issue and it rocks. Alex Ross's art is superb. It almost stole (if not stolen) the attention, instead of reading the story, you can't help but stare at the artwork. Tsk, tsk, tsk... From time to time I have to remind myself to focus on the story, otherwise, I won't be able to finish reading it. The 1st issue so far is good, intriguing and crazy at the same time. I can't wait to have the rest of the installments.

Civil War

This is another offer from Marvel. I still have to find out what this book is all about but I think this have to do on the outcome of the House of M story. How they handle the situation that most of the mutants have lost their powers/abilities. That the remaining mutants protected by Emma Frost (X-men leader) and Doctor Strange (Old Avengers member), have to decide what to do on the situation. One thing for sure is that it's already on my Must-Have list.

According to friends who closely on the lookout of the book, She-Hulk, Spider-Man and Emma Frost play a vital role on the story. But if you happen to have a copy of the Illuminatti, you might have an idea on what will happen on Civil War.

Well all of us still have to find out though this May. I have the list of the schedule of release of the books including several books featuring characters who play huge roles on this story. I don't have it now here with me but when I come back I might put the release schedules. OK? OK.

P.S. The story of Illuminatti is about the secret organization of 7 mutant leaders (Professor X, Namor, Iron-man, etc.) who are having a meeting/debate on how to deal with the situation brought about by the result of House of M. Please have a copy of it too.

House of M

I already read it last month but I just remember posting it on my blog tonight. This is a story of Avengers and X-men, deciding on the fate of Wanda (Scarlet Witch) if they have to keep her alive or just decide on how to handle her situation because she has become a threath to the world (to humans and mutants alike). Wanda lost control on her reality-altering abilities after her major nervous breakdown and put the world in grave danger. Her brother, Pietro (Quicksilver) upon knowing the meeting of the two groups, went to see Wanda and their father Magneto. Yet Magnito himself does not know how to handle the situation.

X-men decides to vote for Wanda's situation but the Avengers refuse to vote. They decided to visit Wanda and decide her fate upon seeing her. Unfortunately they can't find her (pietro and Magneto too). Upon searching, everything went white and the next thing they know, they got what their hearts desire.

The story is great and so is the artwork. I really love the book. It's a must have. I really can't tell much because I don't want to spoil the fun. It has a lot of twist and turns. Hearth thumping suspense and action. I recommend it to all comic lovers out there. When you have the copy just sit back, read and have a great ride. Enjoy!!!
